o matter your age, socio-economic background, profession or relationship status, you can be subject to experiencing feelings of depression. Depression affects one in three people at one or a number of stages in life.
Depression can be caused by many situations. The triggers of depression can vary from person to person and the effects of depression can be mental and/or physical. You might be feeling worthless, feeling like life isn’t worth living, and you might be feeling constantly anxious and worried. Or, you might be having trouble concentrating, experiencing indecisiveness and irritability and find yourself crying a lot.
If depressed, you may not feel like you are getting enjoyment out of life lose interest in things you used to enjoy, feel excessive guilt, a lack of motivation and a lack of self-esteem. You may experience changes in sleeping patterns – disrupted sleep, nightmares, night terrors, oversleeping. You may notice changes in eating patterns, be it loss of appetite or overeating, experience tiredness and a loss of energy, a loss of libido, headaches and/or an upset stomach.
In extreme cases of depression, a person may express no emotion at all feeling numb, and suicidal or self-destructive thoughts or behaviours are not unusual.
