When people speak about having a pornography addiction, they often assume that the addiction is to the images that they see, but it’s in fact not. In fact what they are addicted to is the rush of dopamine that comes when they are watching pornography.

If you’ve ever wondered why porn addiction escalates it’s because when a person watches pornography they get a shot of dopamine, they also get a shot of opiates and at the same time they experience these feelings they are getting whats called desensitise or desensitised and then the brain starts to produce a chemical called DeltaFosB and that chemical deltaFosB makes us search and seek for something novel, it’s known as the Coolidge effect or a lot of people might know it as the “honeymoon period” of a relationship.

So, what happens when a person starts watching pornography? They get a dopamine rush, they also get a DeltaFosB and they get sensitised to it so they’ve got to find something else to keep that dopamine flowing or edging the dopamine. When we watch porn it all goes to the reward part of the brain, and if we continue watching porn for a long time we grow neural pathways and we start thinking and operating through our reward system not our frontal lobe which is the break.

So if someone has got a porn addiction i don’t want to people or family or friends to think its the images but to try and understand that pornography addiction is a chemical addiction and i would argue that it’s part of the disease model and it’s something that is really real.
